US President Donald Trump announced an agreement on a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which will be in effect on May 9, 10, and 11. According to Trump, the ceasefire includes a complete cessation of hostilities and a 1000-for-1000 prisoner exchange.
"I am pleased to announce that a three-day ceasefire will be declared in the war between Russia and Ukraine (May 9, 10, and 11). This ceasefire will include a suspension of all hostilities and a prisoner exchange of 1000 people from each side. This request was made directly by me, and I greatly appreciate its approval by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy." — the American leader wrote on his social network Truth Social.
Trump expressed hope that this would be "the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and difficult war." He added that negotiations to resolve the conflict were ongoing, and the parties were getting closer to a solution every day.
Russia previously unilaterally declared a ceasefire for May 8 and 9 in honor of Victory Day. Later, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov clarified that the ceasefire, at Trump's initiative, had been extended until May 11.
