On February 17, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced his readiness to allow European countries to purchase American-made weapons and military equipment for subsequent transfer to Ukraine. This decision will allow Ukraine to receive American weapons even if direct military support from Washington is reduced.
During a conversation with reporters at the White House, Trump was asked about the possibility of granting such permission. The President answered in the affirmative:
"Yes, I will do it."
Earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stressed that the Trump administration expects European allies to increase their contribution to military and financial support for Ukraine. He noted that in the future, it is European countries that should take the lead in providing both lethal and non-lethal assistance to Ukraine.
According to Statista, from January 24, 2022 to June 30, 2024, the United States provided Ukraine with military aid worth €51,6 billion, Germany - €10,2 billion, Great Britain - €8,9 billion, Denmark - €6,4 billion, the Netherlands - €4,4 billion.
Trump's decision to allow European countries to buy American weapons for Ukraine could significantly affect the dynamics of military support for Kyiv. However, it also means that Trump has no intention of ending the conflict by pressuring Ukraine.
