Trump: Tariff threats worked at BRICS summit

US President Donald Trump is confident that his warnings about imposing additional tariffs on BRICS countries influenced the group's online summit held in September. He told reporters this during a White House briefing.

"My threats worked," Trump said. "They saw that we don't mess around with trade rules."

The American leader was referring to his recent statements about a 10 percent tariff surcharge for countries that support the "anti-American policies" of BRICS, including China, Russia and India.

The virtual summit, chaired by Brazil, focused on strengthening economic ties within the group in response to Washington's tariff initiatives. Participants condemned the "growing unilateral barriers to global trade," but Trump interpreted this as a sign of pressure.

"They wanted to show unity, but our words made them think," he added.
