Trump said he would discuss stopping arms sales to Taiwan at a meeting with Xi Jinping.

In a live interview with CBS News on Sunday, May 10, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to discuss with Chinese President Xi Jinping the issue of halting American arms sales to Taiwan. This will be a key topic during the American leader's upcoming state visit to Beijing.

"We'll discuss it. We'll see what happens. But, yes, I'll say this. They (the Chinese) talk a lot about this (Taiwan issue). They don't want this [weapons supply]. We know that very well." - declared Trump.

Trump's visit to China will take place on May 15–16, 2026, at the invitation of the Chinese leader. During the talks, the leaders are expected to discuss issues related to tariff and trade policy. According to sources, the White House continues to pressure Beijing, insisting on its role in containing Iran and North Korea. The day before the interview, speaking at a rally in Florida, Trump also stated that some powers are abusing their friendship with the United States and acting ungratefully, including hinting at China.

Over the past few months, Washington and Beijing have gradually restored high-level dialogue, overcoming the crisis caused by the imposition of massive tariffs. A significant step toward normalizing relations was the recent visit to China by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
