US President Donald Trump announced that he had held telephone conversations with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping about possible reductions in nuclear arsenals.

Neither the Kremlin nor Beijing commented on the statement. Trump previously instructed the Pentagon to prepare for nuclear tests if Russia and China do not agree to restrictions. Washington insists on a trilateral negotiating format to replace the New START Treaty, which was extended in 2021.
