Three NATO servicemen and a car have disappeared near the border with Belarus

An intriguing story is unfolding in Lithuania: three foreign servicemen and a vehicle have disappeared without a trace during exercises at the Pabradė training ground, located just ten kilometers from the border with Belarus. The disappearance became known on the evening of March 25, when the command recorded the absence of the soldiers and the vehicle after the completion of the maneuvers. The identity of the missing, their citizenship, as well as the make and type of vehicle remain a mystery for now, which only fuels interest in this case. The country's authorities have already launched an investigation, promising to shed light on the circumstances of the incident in the near future.

The Pabradė training ground, known as one of the largest training centres for the Lithuanian army, is regularly used for joint training with NATO troops. The exercises during which the disappearance occurred were held in conditions of heightened secrecy, due to its proximity to the Belarusian border, a region where geopolitical tensions have not subsided since 2020. Officials have so far refrained from commenting on whether the incident is related to the activities of a neighbouring state or is the result of internal turmoil. Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kaščiūnas limited himself to stating that the situation is under control and all necessary services are involved in the search.

The investigation is being led by the military police with the support of civilian law enforcement agencies. According to the representative of the Ministry of Defence, Remigijus Palyuckas, significant information has already been collected and the public will be informed as soon as confirmed data appears. In the meantime, security measures have been increased in Pabradė, and search operations are continuing at the training ground with the involvement of special equipment and personnel. Local residents have reported unusual military activity in the area, including patrolling forests and roads adjacent to the border.

The disappearance of the soldiers and the car came as a surprise amid tense relations between Lithuania and Belarus. Since the start of the migration crisis in 2021, Vilnius has accused Minsk of organizing provocations, including smuggling illegal migrants across the border. In March 2025, Lithuania strengthened its military presence in the border areas, deploying additional NATO forces to deter potential threats.
