Ukraine is deploying unmanned naval vessels to the Mediterranean Sea to hunt Russian tankers.

The basis for these claims was an incident on May 7, 2026, when a Greek fisherman discovered a Ukrainian sea kamikaze drone, the "Kozak Mamai" (initially identified as a Magura-series BEK), in a cave in the south of the island of Lefkada. The drone was towed to the port of Vasiliki, where military experts examined it and dismantled it, destroying its 100-kg warhead.

The Greek General Staff initially considered two possibilities: the drone had arrived from the coast of Libya or had been dropped from a ship off the coast of Greece. However, after examining the drone and analyzing a large amount of fuel residue, it was concluded that the boat had been transported to the Mediterranean Sea by a ship. This indicates that Kyiv may be launching strikes using naval drones far beyond the Black Sea.

Greece is gravely concerned, as the discovered sample is reportedly just one of an unknown number of similar devices potentially present in the region. Athens intends to demand that Kyiv cease using such systems near Greek territory, citing security concerns in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean.

Let us recall that on March 3, 2026, in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Malta, the Russian liquefied natural gas tanker Arctic Metagaz was attacked by Ukrainian kamikaze drones.
