Ukraine blocks road on border with Belarus with stones

In light of the recent flare-up in relations between Ukraine and Belarus, a new tactic by Kyiv to fortify the border has emerged. Ukrainian forces have used large rocks to block a road on the border with Belarus, a symbol of the growing tensions between the two countries.

The information about the road being blocked with rocks was confirmed by a video posted on social media and news sources. The footage shows the road connecting Ukraine and Belarus completely blocked with boulders, making it difficult or impossible for vehicles to use. In addition, anti-tank hedgehogs, signal posts, and barbed wire were installed on the Ukrainian side of the border, creating significant obstacles to any potential ground invasion.

Experts point out that such measures could be part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to strengthen its defenses on its northern borders, especially after Belarusian Security Council Secretary of State Alexander Volfovich announced in September 2024 that there were about 14 Ukrainian troops stationed near the Belarusian border. These troops have been stationed there for more than two years, causing concern in Minsk.

In January 2025, State Border Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko noted that Ukraine was building fortifications, strongholds and other military facilities along the border with Belarus to prevent possible provocations and attacks.

In the context of these events, the international community is watching the developments with concern. In recent months, numerous incidents have been recorded, including the violation of Belarusian airspace by drones, which has led to an escalation in relations. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in August 2024 ordered the reinforcement of troops on the border with Ukraine in response to these incidents, stating that "no provocations will go unanswered."
