Ukraine is considering a strike on the Kapustin Yar test site, where the Russian hypersonic ballistic missile Oreshnik was allegedly launched at the city of Dnepr, sources close to the situation say.
The Kapustin Yar test site, located in the Astrakhan region, is outside the range of Ukrainian missile systems and Western long-range cruise and ballistic missiles. This makes a potential attack possible only with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Experts note that the use of UAVs to strike such a strategic facility could be part of Ukraine's tactics aimed at undermining Russia's capabilities in developing and testing new types of weapons.
The hypersonic missile "Oreshnik" has previously been used in combat conditions and, according to Russian military statements, successfully hit targets. This weapon has high speed and maneuverability, which makes it one of the key components of Russia's strategic arsenal.
An attempt to attack Kapustin Yar, if undertaken, could be a significant escalation in the current conflict. However, if an attack does occur, it will likely be symbolic in nature, since there are no strategic facilities there.
