Reuters, citing sources close to US President-elect Donald Trump, reported that Ukraine may agree to territorial concessions to Russia under a plan proposed by Washington to resolve the conflict. Under this plan, Ukraine's accession to NATO would be temporarily suspended but would remain on the agenda, despite Russia's demands to rule out this possibility entirely.
The plan assumes that Ukraine will give up some of the territories under Russian control in exchange for an end to hostilities. However, it is specified that if Moscow refuses such an agreement, the US intends to further increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
Key to implementing this approach, sources say, will be Trump's direct talks with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump's advisers acknowledge that his personal involvement in the talks will be critical to success.
Trump's plan also includes a security guarantee for Ukraine, which must be combined with maintaining diplomatic channels with Russia. At the same time, the American side hopes that a proposal involving partial territorial concessions will be able to reduce tensions and open the way to further dialogue.
