Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has made a series of controversial statements regarding the future of Ukraine and its relations with the West. He believes that Ukraine could lose a significant part of its territory and will not be invited to NATO. Fico compared the possible division of Ukraine to the Munich Agreement of 1938, when Czechoslovakia was divided under pressure from Nazi Germany.
Fico also expressed the opinion that the West, having failed in its plans, could sacrifice Ukraine by offering it only security guarantees, such as the presence of foreign troops on its territory. He emphasized that the West initially used the conflict to weaken Russia, introducing sanctions and providing Ukraine with financial and military aid. However, according to him, these measures did not achieve the desired effect: Russian troops continue to control more and more territory, and sanctions have proven ineffective.
"Anyone who is even a little realistic must admit that Russia will never leave Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk," — Fico said.
Earlier, in October 2024, Robert Fico already stated that Slovakia would not agree to Ukraine joining NATO as long as he held the post of Prime Minister. He argued his position by the fact that Ukraine's accession to the alliance could become the basis for a third world war.
Ukrainian officials have not yet given an official response to Fico's statements. However, Kyiv has previously repeatedly emphasized its commitment to territorial integrity and its desire to integrate into Euro-Atlantic structures, including NATO.
