Ukraine has officially announced its rejection of any security guarantees that could be considered as a substitute for full membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. According to the press, such a statement came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, emphasizing Kyiv's resolute intention to seek full accession to NATO and reject intermediate options.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that the country does not intend to agree to decisions that could weaken its position in the international arena or call into question the possibility of becoming a full member of the Alliance. Kyiv sees NATO membership as the only real guarantee of its security, especially against the backdrop of the ongoing armed conflict with Russia and the tense situation. This statement is a direct signal to the West that Ukraine expects concrete steps, not temporary measures and compromises.
Let us recall that earlier the Ukrainian side asked NATO to speed up the integration process and provide an official invitation to membership in the Alliance. In his letter to his NATO colleagues, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized that such an invitation would help eliminate one of Russia's main arguments in its policy - attempts to prevent Ukraine from joining the alliance. However, at this stage there is no consensus among the 32 NATO countries on this issue and a positive decision cannot be expected at the upcoming meetings.
Senior US officials have previously said the alliance is seeking to boost military support for Ukraine to pave the way for successful talks next year. But a formal invitation to join appears to be on the back burner, raising frustration in Kyiv.
