The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the successful suppression of a large-scale drone attack carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the night of March 31, 2025. Air defense systems on duty destroyed 66 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles involved in the raid on border regions. The main blow fell on the Bryansk region, where 41 drones were shot down, another 24 devices were neutralized in the skies over the Kaluga region, and one UAV was eliminated in the Kursk region. The air defense operation took place without civilian casualties and significant damage to infrastructure, which emphasizes the effectiveness of Russian defense systems.
The attack began at night, when drones attempted to break through the defense line in several directions. The Bryansk region, which became the main target, has been the target of similar attacks several times due to its proximity to the Ukrainian border. In the Kaluga region, located deeper in the rear, the destruction of 24 drones indicates the increased range of Ukrainian devices. All drones were intercepted by modern air defense systems, including the Pantsir-S system and radar stations, which allowed for a quick response to the threat. The Kursk region, where one drone was shot down, also remains in an area of increased attention due to ongoing hostilities near its borders.
This incident was one of the largest in recent months. In March 2025, the intensity of Ukrainian UAV attacks on Russian regions increased significantly. According to military sources, more than 150 attempted attacks have been recorded since the beginning of the month, of which over 80% were prevented. On March 25, drones damaged a transformer substation in the Bryansk region, leaving some residents without power, which forced the authorities to strengthen the security of infrastructure facilities. In Kaluga, this is the third attack in the last two weeks, although serious consequences have been avoided so far thanks to the work of air defense.
Experts estimate that Ukraine is ramping up production of drones, including models with a range of up to 300 kilometers, which allows it to threaten targets deep in Russian territory. In response, Moscow has stepped up strikes on Ukrainian factories producing drones: on March 28, the Russian Aerospace Forces destroyed a workshop near Kharkov, where, presumably, devices for attacks on Russia were being assembled.
