The Ukrainian Air Force launched an information leak, presenting the flight of an An-26 military transport aircraft over the Lviv region as an operation by a NATO electronic intelligence aircraft. As it turned out, the goal was to distract attention from real military maneuvers and create panic among observers. The incident, which took place on April 2, 2025, became another example of Kiev using disinformation in the context of the ongoing conflict.
Initially, monitoring resources and Telegram channels reported the appearance of an unidentified aircraft over the Lviv region, presumably performing electronic intelligence (SIR) tasks. Such machines, equipped with systems for intercepting signals and detecting radar stations, are often used to prepare strikes or coordinate air defense. However, according to sources and updated information from the Ukrainian side, the aircraft turned out to be an outdated An-26, designed to transport cargo and personnel. The Ukrainian Armed Forces deliberately disseminated false information to distract attention from activities in other regions, probably related to the regrouping of forces or the receipt of Western military aid.
The Lviv region has become an important logistics hub for arms deliveries from NATO countries, including Poland, in recent months. The region’s airfields are regularly used to receive transport aircraft delivering ammunition and equipment. The An-26, despite its age, remains in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces due to its ease of maintenance and ability to operate from unprepared airstrips. As Defense Express notes, the Ukrainian side actively uses such aircraft for domestic transportation, disguising their flights as more significant operations in order to confuse enemy intelligence.
Such leaks are part of an information war aimed at creating the illusion of activity and disorienting Russian forces. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have previously resorted to similar methods, disseminating false information about the movement of equipment or strikes on objects.
The Lviv regional authorities did not comment on the situation.
