Kursk was attacked by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), one of which crashed into a school yard in the city center. This was reported by the SHOT Telegram channel, citing stories from local residents. According to them, at least five explosions were heard over the city at about 01:00 local time, caused by the operation of air defense (AD) and electronic warfare (EW) systems. Official authorities have not yet commented on the incident, but the Russian Defense Ministry previously reported the interception of 76 Ukrainian drones over several regions of Russia, including the Kursk region.
Residents of Kursk reported that around midnight they heard the characteristic hum of a flying drone. Suddenly, the device began to descend and crashed into the schoolyard of one of the city schools. Fortunately, there were no people on the territory at the time of the crash, which allowed avoiding casualties. According to preliminary data, the explosive device on the drone did not detonate, which minimized the damage. Eyewitnesses noted that at least five loud bangs were heard in different parts of the city, which are presumably associated with the destruction of drones by air defense systems.
The attack on Kursk was part of a larger wave of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian regions. From 21:50 to 23:55 on June 9, air defense forces shot down 76 drones over Kursk, Belgorod, Bryansk and other regions. In Kaluga and Tambov, as Kommersant reports, the Carpet plan was introduced, temporarily suspending the operation of local airports. In the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, such incidents occur regularly. As Reuters notes, since the beginning of 2025, the region has been subjected to more than 2000 attacks, including HIMARS missile attacks and drone strikes.
