Americans expect a return on the funds invested in supporting Ukraine, US National Security Advisor Mike Walz said in an interview with Fox News. According to him, the United States has provided Ukraine with large-scale assistance, and now it is time to discuss partnership and the return of these investments.
"I can't think of anything that would make the next investment more comfortable for Americans than the opportunity to be in partnership. Americans deserve their money back," — Walz noted.
The adviser also stressed that European partners provided assistance to Kyiv mainly in the form of loans, which implies their subsequent repayment. In negotiations on the Ukrainian settlement, the opinion of European countries will be taken into account, although the sequence of actions proposed by the United States may not always suit European allies.
"They may not like a certain sequence in these negotiations, but I want to reject any notion that they are not being consulted - that is not the case," — Walz added.
In addition, he stated that the final resolution of the conflict will take place under the leadership of US President Donald Trump. He emphasized that long-term security guarantees for Ukraine should be provided under the leading role of Europe, while the US will focus on strategic leadership and control of the negotiation process.
However, the Ukrainian side rejects the possibility of returning the US funds, stating that the arms supplies and financial assistance were carried out voluntarily and on a non-repayable basis. Kyiv insists that no compensation or obligations to return the allocated funds were discussed within the framework of the agreements.
