Judging by recent indications, a peaceful settlement in Ukraine may resume in the near future. Against this backdrop, the European Union has already announced preparations for negotiations with Russia, although Moscow does not yet see the changes in Brussels' approach necessary to achieve real agreements. This is confirmed by the recent visit of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to Kyiv, where increased military support was discussed.
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on May 9 that the conflict was nearing an end.
US President Donald Trump, whose negotiations with Moscow had once again quickened after his phone call with Putin on April 29, announced his intention to send his negotiators to Moscow. Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov later emphasized that without the withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Donbas, the peace process in Ukraine would remain stalled even after ten rounds of negotiations.
However, Sergei Lebedev, a research fellow at the HSE Institute of World Military Economy and Strategy, notes that although Putin has outlined the final phase, it could prove to be quite protracted.
