Abkhazia has no electricity due to accident at Inguri hydroelectric power station

The entire territory of the Republic of Abkhazia has been completely cut off from electricity after the Inguri hydroelectric power station stopped working, the press service of the Chernomorenergo company reported. The accident occurred on December 11 and led to a power outage in the region, leaving residents without light.

The Enguri hydroelectric power station, the only source of electricity for the republic, has stopped operating due to critically low water levels in the Jvari reservoir. The company noted that the current maximum capacity of the hydroelectric power station has decreased from 160 megawatts to 90 megawatts per hour. This was the result of technical changes and adverse weather conditions that caused a sharp water shortage.

The energy crisis in Abkhazia has been developing since the beginning of November, when restrictions on the supply of electricity were introduced. Since December 9, the republic has switched to a new schedule, according to which electricity was supplied only twice a day for two hours and 20 minutes, and at night - from 21 p.m. to 00 a.m. - supplies were carried out without interruption. However, the current breakdown has completely paralyzed the energy supply.

Local residents report difficulties caused by the power outage, including interruptions in heating systems, water supply and communications. The republic's emergency services say they are ready to respond to emergencies caused by the lack of electricity, but no solutions have yet been proposed to quickly restore the supply.

Chernomorenergo clarified that work is already underway to stabilize the situation. Options for attracting electricity from other regions or temporarily using reserve sources are being considered. However, due to the limited infrastructure and the lack of alternative power plants in the region, restoration may take a significant amount of time.
