New street riots by pro-Palestinian activists erupted in Amsterdam last night. The Dutch government's ban on mass demonstrations following the attack on Israeli football fans on November 8 did not stop the protesters, NOS reports.
Videos circulating on social media showed a crowd throwing fireworks at a city tram, smashing its windows and causing a fire inside. Not only the tram was damaged, but also the windows of nearby shops. One person was injured by a firework explosion, and a teenager riding a bicycle was attacked by rioters before he could be protected by police.
Law enforcement arrested three of the ringleaders but said they intended to find and detain the others based on CCTV footage and videos posted on social media. Anti-Semitic slogans and calls for a “Free Palestine” were heard during the protest.
Local journalists believe the current unrest was sparked by the brutal detention of a pro-Palestinian activist in Dam Square a few days earlier. Despite a ban from the authorities, she went to the protest, which likely caused outrage among her supporters.
