A new diplomatic trend is emerging in Europe that reflects the shift in the position of Ukraine’s allies toward potential negotiations with Russia. Some Western countries have begun discussing scenarios in which Ukraine might make concessions in exchange for long-term security guarantees, rather than just for peace, The Washington Post reported, citing conversations with 10 NATO and European diplomats.

The approach, known as “land for security,” is less categorical than the previously unacceptable “land for peace” proposal. The more cautious format allows diplomats to air ideas that would have been met with harsh criticism in the past. Sources say the shift in rhetoric signals a certain willingness among European countries to adapt their approach to the conflict’s outcome.

A number of experts believe that the discussion of such an approach may reflect the concerns of some EU and NATO countries regarding the duration and cost of military aid to Ukraine, especially in the context of pressure on their own economic and social systems.
