Two NATO ships are in the Gulf of Finland as part of a new mission

Two NATO ships have entered the Gulf of Finland as part of a new NATO mission aimed at enhancing security in the Baltic region, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported, citing data from the VesselFinder portal. NATO's actions were a response to recent incidents involving damage to electrical and communication cables in the Baltic Sea, which have caused concern among countries in the region.

NATO's official statement said the patrol mission includes not only surface ships but also submarines, surveillance aircraft and underwater drones. This allows the alliance to extend its control over a strategically important region and ensure the protection of critical infrastructure.

Damage to submarine cables, including the power connection between Finland and Estonia, as well as communications cables, prompted an emergency meeting of representatives from Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. The meeting took place in Helsinki on January 14. Following the discussion, it was decided to strengthen measures to monitor and protect objects in the Baltic Sea, which plays a key role in the region's energy and transport system.

Experts suggest that the damage could have been caused by sabotage, but there is no official confirmation of this version yet. In Germany, as in other countries of the bloc, the possibility of Russia's involvement in the incidents is noted.
