A Russian submarine cable has been damaged in Finland's exclusive economic zone in the Gulf of Finland. This was reported by the Finnish Coast Guard on its official account on the X social network. Repair work has already begun at the site of the incident, which is being carried out under the supervision of Finnish authorities.
"The Coast Guard of the Gulf of Finland monitors the implementation of the Law on the Exclusive Economic Zone and the conditions for the use of the EEZ in the Gulf of Finland, where a Russian vessel is repairing a broken cable," — the Coast Guard said in a statement.
According to the Finnish television company Yle, the work began on February 8, with the Finnish patrol vessel Turva involved. Mikko Hirvi, a representative of the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard, confirmed that the Russian side had notified about the incident in advance and stressed that this was a normal procedure provided for by law. "We have normal working contact with the Russian authorities on everyday and practical issues," Hirvi noted.
Deputy Commander of the Coast Guard of the Gulf of Finland Ilya Ilyin specified that the Russian side received official permission to carry out repair work and the Finnish side is supervising within the scope of its authority. However, neither Finnish nor Russian representatives disclosed details about which cable was damaged.
Cases of damage to submarine cables in the Baltic region have become increasingly frequent in recent years. For example, in 2023, Rostelecom's cable connecting Kingisepp in the Leningrad Region with Kaliningrad was damaged in the Gulf of Finland. At that time, the accident did not have a significant impact on the operation of the infrastructure.
In late January 2025, a similar incident occurred in the Baltic Sea, when a fiber optic cable linking the Latvian city of Venspils with the Swedish island of Gotland was damaged. The Latvian Navy discovered a bulk carrier sailing to Russia under the flag of Malta in the area of the damage. Later, the Swedish prosecutor's office announced the detention of the vessel Vezhen, which could have caused the damage to the cable, but the version of sabotage was ruled out.
