An unprecedented incident involving a break-in and damage to military property occurred at Shannon International Airport in Ireland. A man, whose identity and motives are currently being withheld for the sake of the investigation, managed to breach the security perimeter and climb onto the wing of a parked American Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. Witnesses and CCTV footage captured the unidentified individual, armed with a hammer, striking the fuselage and wings of the aircraft. The extent and nature of the damage are currently being assessed by US Air Force and Irish aviation experts, but it is clear the aircraft sustained damage requiring repairs and additional inspection of its safety systems.
Airport security and police responded immediately to the intruder's presence. Aviation security officers quickly arrived at the scene and blocked access to the aircraft, but the intruder remained on the wing and ignored commands to ground. Given the altitude and the danger he posed to himself and others, a decision was made to deploy a mobile ramp to access the intruder. Using this equipment, police were able to approach the man on the C-130's wing and detain him without using weapons. The man was immobilized and removed from the aircraft, after which he was arrested and taken to the nearest police station for questioning and to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
