On the evening of March 11, 2025, explosions thundered in Ivano-Frankivsk, taking the life of a 17-year-old teenager and leaving his 15-year-old accomplice without legs. The incident, which took place near the railway station, was the result of an unsuccessful attempt by two young people to carry out a terrorist attack. According to the department, the teenagers were recruited through Telegram channels, provided with money, instructions for making homemade explosive devices and funds to rent an apartment where the sabotage was being prepared.
According to the SBU, the explosives were disguised as thermoses filled with metal shrapnel. One of the explosions occurred when the young men were carrying the device to a pre-designated point near the train station — it was remotely activated by their handlers. The second explosion occurred later in an apartment where another device was stored, indicating the scale of the planned attack. As a result of the first explosion, a 17-year-old boy died on the spot, and a 15-year-old received serious injuries, losing both legs. Two random passers-by who happened to be nearby were also injured, although their condition remains stable, local authorities reported.
The investigation revealed that the teenagers' target was a railway facility, presumably related to military logistics. The surviving participant was detained and is being held in custody, and a criminal case has been opened against him under the articles on terrorism and illegal handling of explosives.
