Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on questions about possible congratulations to Donald Trump from Vladimir Putin in the event of his victory in the US presidential election. According to Peskov, he is not aware of any such plans by the Russian leader. He recalled that the US is a country that is "directly and indirectly involved in the conflict against Russia" and therefore congratulations from the head of state require a cautious approach.
Peskov stressed that the election results are an internal matter for the United States and Russia will remain neutral regarding the results of the vote. At the same time, he noted that a certain optimism regarding the possible election of Trump is understandable, since during the election campaign the former president made statements about peaceful intentions in the international arena, which is likely to arouse interest in Russia.
