The Kremlin reacted negatively to the clause of the "centennial treaty" between Ukraine and Britain on cooperation in the Sea of Azov

The Kremlin reacted negatively to the conclusion of an agreement between Ukraine and Great Britain, which provides for cooperation in the field of maritime security in the Sea of Azov. The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov emphasized that this agreement does not guarantee Ukraine membership in NATO. He also noted that Great Britain, as a NATO member, can advance its military infrastructure to the borders of Russia, which causes serious concern in Moscow.

Earlier, on January 12, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a security cooperation agreement. The document envisages that the UK will lead the maritime security coalition and make a significant contribution to the development of Ukraine's navy. The goal of the coalition is to support Ukraine in becoming a full participant in maritime security in the Black and Azov Seas until 2035 and beyond.

In response to this, Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would closely monitor the development of the situation and take measures to ensure its security. He emphasized that the advancement of NATO military infrastructure to the Russian borders would not go unanswered by Moscow.

Let us recall that in June 2023, Russia denounced the agreement with Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, citing the fact that after the incorporation of new territories into the Russian Federation, the Sea of Azov became internal for Russia.

The situation around the new agreement between Ukraine and the UK adds tension to relations between Moscow and Kiev, and also raises concerns in the context of security in the Black Sea and Azov Sea region.
