In response to the recent statement by US President Joe Biden about his readiness to negotiate with Russia, China and the DPRK on issues of reducing nuclear potential, the Kremlin expressed its position. The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov emphasized that in the current conditions, discussing this issue is impossible without taking into account all aspects of global security, especially against the backdrop of a conflict in which Russia considers itself a target on the part of Western countries.
“In the conditions of the war that is being waged against Russia with the indirect and even direct involvement of nuclear powers, it is impossible to talk about reducing nuclear arsenals without considering all aspects of security.”, Peskov noted in a comment to journalists.
He added that such contacts are necessary for Russia, but they cannot be conducted in isolation from the overall situation.
Russia insists on a comprehensive approach to security issues, including the threats it sees from Western countries. The Kremlin believes that the current international situation requires taking into account all factors affecting the strategic balance before serious negotiations on nuclear issues can begin.
Biden's statement came in the context of his speech at the Nobel Prize ceremony for the Hidankyo Association of Atomic Bomb Victims in Japan. In the letter, the US president expressed hope that the world could eventually be free of nuclear weapons.
