An unknown gunman opened fire at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandish Road in suburban Flint, Michigan. According to Grand Blanc Township police, the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time. Several people were injured, and the gunman was killed.
"There was an active shooter incident at the Latter-day Saints Church on McCandish Road. There are several casualties, and the shooter has been neutralized. The church is actively burning." - the police reported in an official statement.
Fox 2 Detroit estimates the number of injured at between six and eight people. The building is engulfed in flames, and firefighters and law enforcement are deployed to the scene. Drone footage released by witnesses shows thick smoke billowing over the church.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi said:
"I am receiving reports of what appears to be a horrific shooting and fire at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. FBI and ATF agents are en route. This type of violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and horrifying. Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy."
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed:
"FBI personnel are responding to events in Grand Blanc, Michigan, to provide necessary support."
Police scanners record the discovery of an improvised explosive device in the truck used by the attacker to enter the building.
"An IED was recovered from the truck." - the dispatchers transmitted over the radio.
The perpetrator's motives have not yet been established; the FBI and local authorities are investigating.
