Activist Demyan Ganul killed in Odessa

On March 14, a well-known Ukrainian activist, Demyan Ganul, who became famous for his videos in which he called on Ukrainian men to report to military registration and enlistment offices for mobilization, was shot dead in the center of Odessa. This was reported by local media, citing police data and eyewitness accounts. The incident occurred on Ukrainian Heroes Avenue (formerly Aleksandrovsky Avenue), not far from the residential building where Ganul lived. According to preliminary information, an unknown man fired two shots at the activist, after which he fled the scene of the crime. Despite the efforts of doctors, it was not possible to save Ganul - he died on the spot from his wounds.

Law enforcement officers quickly arrived at the scene and began the investigation. A "Siren" plan was announced in Odessa to find and detain the suspect. At the moment, the police are establishing the circumstances of the murder and the motives of the attacker, but there is no official information about the identity of the shooter yet. Eyewitnesses report that Ganul tried to escape, but was overtaken by bullets. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klymenko said that he is taking the investigation under personal control, and a special investigative group from the central office of the National Police has already been sent to Odessa.

In 2024, Moscow's Basmanny Court arrested Ganul in absentia, accusing him of destroying military burial sites and attacking objects under international protection, after which Russia put him on the international wanted list.

According to the Dumskaya publication, the activist has repeatedly received threats against him, and in 2023 he was attacked, after which he turned to the SBU for protection.
