Two people have been killed and at least 35 injured after a hydrogen sulfide leak at a Mexican oil company PEMEX facility in Deer Park, Texas. Officials said the incident occurred Thursday afternoon, Oct. 10, and the situation remains tense as access to the affected area remains difficult.
Deer Park Mayor Jerry Mouton assured residents that the chemical spill was confined to the plant, although the smell of hydrogen sulfide was still in the air. He said there was no threat to the public and the situation was under control.
According to a statement from PEMEX, a gas leak was detected at one of its production units at 16:40 p.m. local time. The plant's emergency services, the local Industrial Mutual Aid (CIMA), the Harris County Emergency Management Agency, and other state agencies are on the scene.
State Highway 225 leading to the plant was temporarily closed to ensure safety. Plant officials warned that nearby residents may notice gas fumes as part of containment efforts. They also noted that air quality is being closely monitored and that no significant impacts to surrounding areas have been reported.
