Recognition of the sovereignty of the DNR and LNR may occur as early as next month.

The unrecognized republics of Donbass may gain their own sovereignty as early as February 2022. This is due to the fact that next week the Council of the State Duma intends to discuss the issue of recognizing the self-proclaimed republics, followed by an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The process of recognizing the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics was initiated a few days ago by an appeal to the speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin by the deputies of the Communist Party. According to Volodin, this issue will be discussed in the near future. After that, the corresponding appeal, if a positive decision is made, will be sent to the Russian leader for his approval.

According to Volodin, the recognition of the DPR and LPR can become a guarantee of security for Russian citizens living in the Donbass. However, not everyone shares the prospect of recognition of the self-proclaimed republics. In particular, according to Konstantin Zatulin, the recognition of the eastern part of Ukraine as independent republics could harm Russian interests. This indicates that there is no unequivocal opinion on this matter.
