The State Duma of the Russian Federation has developed a new bill that proposes toughening the punishment for "discrediting" the Russian Armed Forces and calls for sanctions against Russia. The authors of the amendments were deputies Irina Yarovaya and Vasily Piskarev. The main changes concern toughening the liability and increasing fines, as well as introducing the possibility of confiscating property obtained as a result of such actions.
According to the amendments, criminal liability for "discrediting" the army will be imposed immediately if the actions were committed for "mercenary motives." Previously, such cases were considered an administrative offense, but the new bill proposes tougher measures.
Punishment for calls for sanctions is also being toughened. If they were made for selfish reasons or for hire, the offender faces a fine of 1 to 3 million rubles or imprisonment for up to five years. For comparison, the current version of the law provides for a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles and imprisonment for up to three years.
An important innovation of the bill is the possibility of confiscating property obtained as a result of actions classified under these articles.
