Russia revives the project of a strategic bomber with a nuclear jet engine

In Russia, they decided to revive the project of a Soviet strategic bomber with a nuclear engine.

Russian aircraft manufacturers intend to revive the project of a domestic strategic bomber equipped with a nuclear power plant, which will make its flights and speed almost unlimited. Previously, a similar project was developed by Soviet designers, but due to insufficient development of relevant technologies, it was not possible to implement an innovative bomber in those years, which, however, may be within the power of the Russian military.

“The modified nuclear engine of the Burevestnik cruise missile can be adapted for the needs of aviation. The principle of operation of the engine of the Burevestnik cruise missile is to heat the air, which flows directly to the reactor, without any intermediate heat exchangers. This is what is considered a single-circuit engine. It is reported that by adding an additional circuit to an existing power plant, it can be placed on aircraft. This, in turn, implies virtually unlimited range and flight time "- сообщает Russian edition "Nation News".

Thanks to the presence of a nuclear power plant, such a bomber will be able to fly over great distances, and in fact an unlimited supply of fuel will allow it to develop supersonic speed in cruise mode.

A similar project was previously developed in the United States, but the Americans also failed to achieve significant progress.

Nikolay, "The project to investigate the possibilities of using nuclear energy in a ramjet engine was launched on January 1, 1957. Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (predecessor of Livermore National Laboratory) was selected as the executor of the project, and Dr. Ted Merkle was the director.

The first engine, the Tory-IIA, was tested on May 14, 1961, within seconds.

The second test was carried out in 1964, the Tory-IIC engine ran for about 5 minutes at full power (513 MW and over 160 kN thrust). "

Searches for this aircraft stopped due to the fact that the crew's protection ate most of the payload. Work on an autonomous rocket both in the USSR and in the United States stopped due to the impossibility of transporting sea trials - the contrail infected a huge territory.

Maybe think better? For example, that the reactor used in Petrel, to put it mildly, is very different from the usual one.

False! Bluff! The release of radioactive waste into the atmosphere is inevitable. The bomber is forced to fly periodically for training (radioactive waste is inevitable with modern technology). The missile is launched once to hit the target, and after its launch, even the grass will not grow in the event of a nuclear war.

Well, they will make this plane - cool! And then this "miracle of technology" will crash to the ground and the territory will be contaminated with radiation for at least 50 years - there will be another Chernobyl / Fukushima! Gravity, like the human factor, cannot be ruled out categorically!
It is better to put nuclear technologies for flights into space!

The more such projects the better
