The United States denies the participation of its military in the crew of the Patriot air defense system that shot down the Il-76

The United States of America officially denies allegations that American military personnel participated in the crew of the Patriot air defense system that shot down a Russian Il-76 military transport plane in January. The Russian Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, previously suggested the presence of Americans among the operators of the system, but the US State Department strongly refutes such statements.

“The claim that US forces are involved in the conflict corresponds to Kremlin propaganda, not reality.”, RIA Novosti quoted the State Department as saying.

The event took place on January 24 and caused a wide resonance. Everyone on board the flight died, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners, three Russian officers and the crew. The Russian Federation and Ukraine exchanged accusations over the incident.

American media, including The New York Times, citing US officials, reported that the plane was shot down by the Patriot system.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the crash of the Il-76 raises questions about the possibility of at least some kind of agreement with Kiev. Ukrainian media first wrote that the plane was shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but subsequently deleted this data from their websites.
