On Saturday, May 10, 2026, a grenade explosion occurred in the center of Akhtyrka, Sumy Oblast, injuring several people. According to preliminary reports, the incident was perpetrated by an intoxicated man.

According to Sumy Oblast police, law enforcement received a report of a man carrying a grenade on a city street. Patrol police officers, a district police officer, and an officer from the Security Police Department arrived at the scene and negotiated with him.

According to local online groups, the man initially threatened to detonate an explosive device inside a business in the city. Patrons were evacuated from the premises, after which the man was escorted outside. While negotiating with law enforcement, he detonated the grenade.

The explosion injured the man, three police officers, and one civilian. All victims were hospitalized. A police investigative team is working at the scene, investigating the circumstances of the incident.
