SVO News, December 9, 2025, Avia.pro. Washington is increasing pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to agree to significant territorial losses and other compromises within the framework of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan, two Ukrainian officials told Axios.
According to them, the terms of the American proposal worsened for Kyiv after Trump advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Vladimir Putin last week. One official noted that during a two-hour phone call on Saturday, US representatives clearly sought immediate confirmation of the plan from Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader then said he had reviewed the updated version of the document just an hour before the call.
"It seemed like the US was trying to sell us on Russia's desire to take over the entire Donbas in various ways, and that the Americans wanted Zelensky to agree to this in a phone call." — the publication quoted a Ukrainian official.
After several weeks of intensive negotiations, the Kyiv side believes that several points of the plan favor Moscow. A US official refuted these assessments, emphasizing that Washington also insists on softening Russia's demands.
Discussions are currently focused on two key aspects: Moscow's demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire territory of Donbas and Kyiv's request for reliable security guarantees from Washington to prevent future threats.
