The British government intends to announce on February 24 a new package of military support for Ukraine, as well as the introduction of additional sanctions against Russia. This was reported by The Daily Telegraph, citing a source close to the UK authorities. The statement is timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the start of the special military operation, which emphasizes the symbolic nature of the step aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow and strengthening Kyiv's position in the ongoing conflict.
According to the publication, Prime Minister Keir Starmer will personally present the initiative, which includes both arms supplies and economic measures against the Russian leadership. The new aid package is expected to focus on replenishing the Ukrainian army's reserves, depleted by years of fighting. At the same time, sanctions will affect key sectors of the Russian economy, strengthening the restrictions already in place. This step, as journalists note, could cause tension in relations with the United States, where President Donald Trump advocates a speedy peaceful resolution of the conflict, rather than its escalation.
Since February 2022, the UK has imposed restrictions on hundreds of Russian companies and individuals, freezing the assets of banks such as VTB and banning Aeroflot flights over its territory. The new measures are likely to target the oil and gas sector and the shadow financial schemes that Russia uses to circumvent sanctions. According to The Telegraph, three departments are involved in the development - the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which indicates a comprehensive approach.
