Venezuela is holding preliminary consultations with Iran regarding the potential acquisition of Khalij-e Fars (Persian Gulf) anti-ship ballistic missiles, capable of striking maritime targets at ranges of up to 300 km. Reports of the talks have surfaced in unofficial sources, but officials in Caracas and Tehran have not confirmed them. Experts advise treating the reports with caution, given the history of such rumors.
The Khalij-e Fars is a solid-fuel missile based on the Fateh-110 with an optronic homing head, designed for attacking ships. It entered service with Iran in 2011 and has been repeatedly demonstrated at parades.
Military cooperation between Venezuela and Iran has intensified since 2020 amid US sanctions. In 2020, President Nicolás Maduro called the purchase of Iranian missiles "a good idea."
In 2023–2024, Venezuela received Iranian Mohajer-6 drones, Zolfaghar boats, and CM-90 missiles. In 2023, the US Treasury sanctioned Iranian officials for the drone sales and agreements worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
