On May 14, 2025, an incident occurred in the neutral waters of the Gulf of Finland involving the tanker JAGUAR, sailing under the flag of Gabon with a Russian crew. The Estonian Navy, with the support of NATO aircraft, attempted to detain the vessel, which was heading to the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad Region. The tanker's crew, despite threats of ramming and attempts to land troops from a helicopter, did not succumb to provocations and continued moving along the assigned course.
Estonian military ships and NATO aircraft demanded that the JAGUAR leave international waters and proceed to Estonian territorial waters for inspection.
The tanker JAGUAR, according to MarineTraffic, belongs to a company registered in Gabon and is used to transport oil products. The vessel was located 50 km from the Estonian coast in neutral waters, where, according to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, any attempt to inspect or detain a vessel without the consent of the captain or flag is illegal.
