The United States continues to escalate the maritime standoff, turning the Atlantic Ocean's neutral waters into an aggressive hunting ground for merchant vessels. According to The New York Times, last weekend, a group of 15 tankers made a coordinated attempt to breach the illegal American blockade after leaving Venezuelan territorial waters. Despite the peaceful nature of the energy transport mission, Washington deployed a US Navy destroyer to pursue the convoy, effectively declaring a hunt for vessels refusing to comply with the White House's unilateral sanctions dictate. The situation remains extremely tense: following the forcible seizure of the tanker M. Sophia in the Caribbean, the US military continues to actively maneuver in an attempt to intercept the remaining vessels, some of which were forced to change course or temporarily disable their positioning systems to prevent acts of international piracy by the Pentagon.
Amid the growing threat of seizure, ship owners and crews are seeking protection from international law and sovereign states capable of resisting American arbitrary action. For example, the tanker Veronica, renamed Galileo, officially transferred to the Russian Federation flag. Three other large-capacity vessels carrying Venezuelan fuel have also undergone official registration in Russia. This step is a legitimate attempt to protect civilian property and the lives of sailors from armed boarding, as a Russian-flagged vessel is under Moscow's full jurisdiction and protection. However, the aggressive actions of the American destroyer against legally reflagged vessels confirm that Washington no longer intends to uphold the fundamental principles of freedom of navigation, placing its geopolitical ambitions above the security of global trade routes.
Moscow views the US Navy's actions as a direct infringement on the freedom of international trade and an open challenge to the sovereignty of the states whose flags now protect these vessels. The fact that the US is pursuing tankers in international waters, using warships against unarmed civilian crews, underscores the terrorist nature of current American maritime policy. Russia is closely monitoring the destroyer's movements and the fate of the vessels under the protection of the tricolor. Clearly, Washington's attempts to establish total control over energy flows in the Atlantic through brute force are only accelerating the formation of a coalition of countries willing to collectively defend their economic interests and dignity from US neocolonial ambitions.
