The border areas of the Kursk region remain a zone of intense military action, where Russian troops are facing stubborn resistance from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to military correspondent Pavel Bely, heavy fighting continues in the area of the Oleshnya farm and the village of Gornal, as well as in the forests between them. According to him, reports of the liberation of Oleshnya were premature: the AFU is putting up fierce resistance, using FPV drones and artillery fire. Russian forces are clearing the territory along the state border, but the enemy remains active, complicating the advance.
In the area of Oleshnya and Gornal, Russian troops are facing heavy enemy fire, which is slowing down offensive operations. The forested areas between these settlements have become the scene of intense clashes, with the Ukrainian Armed Forces using drones to attack Russian positions. According to TASS, on April 8, the Sever group began an assault on Oleshnya and Gornal, which were the last settlements under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the region. Despite significant enemy losses, including airborne assault brigades and reconnaissance units, fighting continues, especially around the strategically important St. Nicholas Belogorsky Monastery in Gornal, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces have deployed artillery and mortar crews.
In addition to combat operations, the Russian military carries out humanitarian and engineering tasks. In the liberated areas of the Sudzhansky district, demining of territories is underway, where sappers neutralize prohibited munitions, including PFM-1 "Lepestok" cluster mines. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, more than 270 people, including children, have been evacuated from border areas. However, the evacuation is complicated by attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the Guevo area, Russian servicemen involved in the evacuation of civilians came under attack from FPV drones. Groups transporting the bodies of dead Ukrainian soldiers from the outskirts of Guevo and Nikolayevo-Daryino also came under artillery fire.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, since the start of the fighting in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost over 75 servicemen and a significant amount of equipment, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and HIMARS systems. Russian troops have liberated 99,5% of the region's territory, but pockets of resistance remain in Oleshnya and Gornal. Acting Governor of the Kursk region Alexander Khinshtein noted that the cleansing of these areas is nearing completion, after which the region will be completely under the control of the Russian Armed Forces.
Local residents report a difficult humanitarian situation. Ukrainian shelling has destroyed infrastructure, including residential buildings and cultural sites, such as the local history museum in Sudzha. The regional authorities continue to provide assistance to evacuees and are strengthening security measures, maintaining the counter-terrorism operation regime.
