Russian armed forces have thwarted an attempt to use chemical weapons in the territory of the Luhansk People's Republic, destroying a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a munition containing toxic substances. This was reported by Rodion Miroshnik, former LPR ambassador to Moscow, who currently holds the post of adviser to the head of the republic. The incident occurred in the Troitsky district of the LPR, where air defense systems on duty quickly detected and eliminated the threat, preventing a potential attack on civilians and military facilities.
According to Miroshnik, the drone was carrying a chemical munition that could have been used to harm both military personnel and civilians living in frontline areas. The downed drone was identified as a device specially modified to deliver hazardous substances, which, according to Russian authorities, indicates the Ukrainian side's intention to violate international norms prohibiting the use of chemical weapons. The specific type of toxic substance has not yet been disclosed, but experts suggest that it could be substances capable of causing mass casualties, including suffocation, burns, or poisoning.
This incident is yet another episode in a series of accusations leveled by the Russian side against Ukraine in the context of using prohibited methods of warfare. The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly stated that the Ukrainian armed forces used chemical substances, including cases in the Zaporizhia region and the DPR, but international organizations such as the UN have not yet confirmed these accusations.
Meanwhile, the situation in the LPR remains tense, with regular shelling and attempted drone attacks.
