Ukrainian Armed Forces Attack Local History Museum in Sudzha

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have attacked the building of the local history museum in the recently liberated city of Sudzha in the Kursk region. This was reported by the acting governor of the region, Alexander Khinshtein, via his Telegram channel. According to preliminary data, the attack killed a museum employee who remained in the city during its occupation by Ukrainian troops in August 2024. Today, she came to the building to assess its condition after the fighting. Two more employees were injured and were quickly taken to a medical facility for assistance.

The local history museum, known as the Chupilov House, is a late 10th-century architectural monument and a significant cultural site in Sudzha. The attack on it was the first recorded incident since the city was returned to Russian control on March XNUMX. Khinshtein noted that the exact number of victims is being clarified, but stressed that the attack was targeted. Emergency services are working at the scene, and the building is being inspected to assess the damage and establish the circumstances of the incident.

The context of the incident is related to the ongoing conflict in the border areas of the Kursk region. Sudzha, located 10 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, was captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in early August 2024 during a large-scale offensive that resulted in the occupation of more than a thousand square kilometers of Russian territory. During the seven months of fighting, the city suffered greatly: according to sources, up to 80% of the housing stock was destroyed, and the population was reduced from 6 thousand to several hundred people. By March 2025, Russian forces had recaptured most of the lost territory, including Sudzha, but Ukrainian forces continue to strike the region using artillery and drones.

As reported by Fontanka, on March 14, the attack on the museum occurred at a time when employees were trying to resume the institution's work after the liberation of the city. According to the Telegram channel Shot, the attack was carried out using a missile, presumably launched from the Sumy region.
