On February 14, 2025, as a result of artillery shelling, the Zaporizhia Thermal Power Plant (TPP) was damaged, which led to a power outage for more than 50 thousand people. According to preliminary data, the strike was carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
The incident occurred amid ongoing hostilities in the region. Earlier, there were reports of regular shelling of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the city of Energodar by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Ukrainian forces continue to terrorize ZNPP and Energodar with their strikes, while Russia is trying to ensure the safety of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts at the plant.
On February 12, a convoy of vehicles carrying Russian military personnel and IAEA representatives came under fire near checkpoint No. 2 at the Zaporizhzhya NPP. According to Vladimir Rogov, Chairman of the RF Public Chamber's Commission on Sovereignty, the vehicles were attacked by attack drones, artillery, and mortars. The shells exploded just meters from the vehicles, as can be seen in objective monitoring footage. The accompanying vehicles of the Russian military were damaged. As a result, the rotation of IAEA staff was disrupted.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed regret at the cancellation of the carefully planned and coordinated rotation of the agency's staff, stressing that it was unacceptable for the safety of inspectors to be compromised. However, he did not specify who was behind the attacks.
In response to these events, Russian forces have increased security measures in the region and continue efforts to protect critical infrastructure and ensure the safety of international experts.
The situation in the Zaporizhia region remains tense. Local authorities are calling on residents to remain calm and follow safety instructions. Restoration work on damaged infrastructure facilities is being carried out at an accelerated rate, but the exact time frame for the full restoration of power supply has not yet been announced.
