In the Sumy direction, in the area of the village of Demidovka in the Belgorod region, high tensions remain due to the actions of Ukrainian forces. According to military journalist Yuriy Podolyaka, by 21:45 on March 19, 2025, in the so-called "passage" zone, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces' engineering obstacle clearance vehicle (IMR) had previously moved the "dragon's teeth" anti-tank obstacles, the appearance of another IMR was recorded. This equipment is actively widening the passage, which indicates preparations for a new offensive. Podolyaka noted the significant activity of Ukrainian FPV drones in this area, emphasizing that the enemy is likely planning a mechanized assault, which could begin either at night or in the morning of March 20. Russian troops, according to him, continue to hold their positions despite the growing pressure.
The situation at Demidovka remains in the spotlight due to the strategic importance of this section of the border. Earlier, on March 18, the Ukrainian IMR tried to clear the way by advancing onto the paved road, but was destroyed by Russian cover forces. The current actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces indicate an intention to consolidate the success and break through deeper into the territory, using engineering equipment to overcome fortifications and drones to support infantry and armored groups. The Russian side, in turn, delivers fire strikes, preventing the enemy from advancing beyond the "dragon's teeth".
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that several attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces were repelled in the Belgorod Region over the past 19 hours, including attempts to break through using armored vehicles and ATVs. The Severny Veter Telegram channel clarified that on March 18, the Ukrainian infantry was able to penetrate several hundred meters deep into Russian territory near Demidovka, but was routed. Analysts attribute Kyiv's increased activity to the desire to distract Russian forces from other areas and create an information effect against the backdrop of Putin and Trump's negotiations on a possible ceasefire. According to Reuters on March 30, the American initiative for a XNUMX-day ceasefire has not yet received full consent from the parties, which may spur the Ukrainian Armed Forces to demonstrate activity.
Experts note that the use of FPV drones has become an important element of Ukrainian tactics in the border area, allowing for pinpoint strikes. However, Russian air defense systems, including the S-400, and aviation effectively counter these threats. Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced increased security measures and the evacuation of residents from border villages, including the Krasnoyarsk District, where Demidovka is located.
