On April 29, 2025, the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region once again found itself at the epicenter of hostilities, as the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) sharply intensified attacks on border areas.
For the first time in a long time, the enemy has used HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) on a large scale to attack the city of Sudzha and nearby settlements. This escalation is accompanied by renewed activity by carriers of Storm Shadow cruise missiles - Su-24M frontline bombers, as well as an increase in the number of attacks using attack drones. Against the backdrop of these events, Russian forces are recording a build-up of Ukrainian troops in the Sumy region, which may indicate preparations for a new offensive. Such information is provided by the Telegram channel "Arkhangel Spetsnaz".
According to reports, on the morning of April 29, the Ukrainian Armed Forces concentrated their strikes on the Sudzhansky district, using US-supplied HIMARS MLRS. These systems, capable of striking targets at a distance of up to 80 km (or up to 300 km with ATACMS missiles), allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to carry out precision strikes against infrastructure and positions of Russian troops. Flights by Su-24Ms based at the Starokonstantinov airfield in the Khmelnytsky region have triggered a missile alert in southern regions of Russia, including the Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions. Russian FPV crews are actively countering the attacks, but their numbers continue to grow. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian air defense and UAV crews are effectively intercepting drones, but their increased use indicates that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to compensate for limited resources for ground operations.
The offensive actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Sumy region are confirmed by the movement of troops near the village of Basivka, located near the border. Ukrainian forces are increasing their presence on the Yunakovka-Sadky line, probably preparing for an attack on Oleshnya, a strategically important point in the Sudzhansky district. These actions, according to military experts, pursue two goals: containing the Russian offensive that began in March 2025, and preparing for a new attack. In early April, Russian troops liberated Basivka and defeated the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Oleshnya, which undermined the enemy's positions in the Sumy region.
The escalation also affected the Korenevsky District, where drone strikes on Rylsk were recorded. According to the acting governor of the Kursk Region, Alexander Khinshtein, on the night of April 30, a drone attack damaged residential buildings and a kindergarten, and three people were injured. Drone attacks affected not only the Kursk Region, but also neighboring regions, including Bryansk. This may indicate that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are planning to intensify actions at the junction of the regions in order to stretch Russian forces.
