Explosion at Gimhae military base: What is known about the incident

On December 23, an explosion occurred at a military base in the city of Gimhae, located in the southeast of South Korea. The incident occurred at about 09:27 local time during an inspection of one of the fuel storage facilities. As a result of the explosion, two civilian employees were injured, who were quickly taken to the nearest medical facility for the necessary assistance.

Preliminary data point to a possible technical equipment failure as the cause of the accident. However, officials have not yet provided an exact version of what happened, and the investigation is ongoing. In connection with the incident, temporary restrictions on access have been introduced on the territory of the base and security measures have been strengthened.

Gimhae City is known for its strategic importance as it is home to several military installations, including air force bases and army units. Incidents such as these have raised concerns among both locals and authorities, especially in light of recent events involving heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Let us recall that earlier in October 2024, in the city of Busan, also located in the southeast of the country, a fire broke out at the 55th supply depot of American troops. The fire was extinguished in about four hours, and, fortunately, there were no casualties.

No details on this have yet been provided.
