Explosions thundered in Gomel: Unidentified kamikaze UAV shot down

On the night of February 13, 2025, Gomel residents reported the sounds of explosions that occurred after midnight. According to eyewitnesses, the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fell within the city limits. There is no information yet about possible damage or casualties.

This case is not isolated. Earlier, in September 2024, similar incidents were recorded in the Gomel region. At that time, the Belarusian Defense Ministry reported a violation of the country's airspace by drones, which were destroyed by air defense forces. Officials did not specify the origin of the devices, but some sources assumed their Russian or Ukrainian origin.

In recent years, Belarus has been actively developing its own unmanned industry. Since 2009, the country has been developing various models of drones for civilian and military purposes. Among them are the Berkut series of devices designed for optical-electronic reconnaissance, and the Grif-100 complex, created for surveillance and jamming.

However, despite its own developments, Belarus faces the problem of unauthorized penetration of drones into its territory. In September 2024, two drones were shot down in the Gomel region, violating the country's airspace. At that time, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus reported the violation of the state border by unmanned aerial vehicles, which were destroyed by air defense forces.

Experts note that such incidents may be related to general tensions in the region and the use of drones by various parties for reconnaissance or other purposes. In the current geopolitical situation, airspace security issues are becoming especially relevant for Belarus.

At this time, officials have not provided any additional information about the February 13 night incident.
