Explosions in Belgorod: Ukraine attacks city with kamikaze drones

Residents of Belgorod were again awakened by the sounds of explosions in the sky above the city on the night of March 26, 2025. According to eyewitnesses, the first loud bangs were recorded at about 00:15 in the area of Kharkovskaya Gora, one of the key residential areas of the regional center. As reported by the SHOT Telegram channel, citing local residents, the sounds were accompanied by the characteristic hum of unmanned aerial vehicles flying at low altitude in the southwestern part of the city. Preliminary, the Russian air defense system worked successfully, shooting down several air targets. At the time of publication, official data on the consequences - destruction or victims - from the authorities has not been received, which leaves the situation in limbo.

According to locals, the night began with sharp sounds reminiscent of artillery salvos, after which bright flashes appeared in the sky — likely traces of air defense. Some residents of the southwestern neighborhoods noted that the drone's hum was clearly audible several minutes before the explosions, indicating that the drones were flying at a low altitude. Reports of this quickly spread on social networks, where Belgorod residents shared their observations and expressed concern for the region's safety. While the regional authorities have not provided any comments, local Telegram channels are actively discussing the incident, suggesting that the target could have been military or infrastructure facilities near the city.

The Belgorod Region, located on the border with Ukraine, has remained in a zone of increased tension since the beginning of 2025. Night drone attacks have become almost routine for the region. Thus, on the night of March 24, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the destruction of three Ukrainian UAVs over the territory of the region, two of which were shot down near Belgorod. Then, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, there was no significant destruction, although shrapnel damaged several cars and knocked out windows in one of the private houses. Experts associate the increasingly frequent raids with attempts by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike strategic objects, including ammunition depots and military bases located in the border area.
