On the night of April 15, 2025, Kursk was targeted by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which, according to local authorities, were aimed at civilian infrastructure. The strikes resulted in serious damage to residential buildings, the death of an 85-year-old woman, and several other people were injured. The attack, which began around midnight, was accompanied by multiple explosions: eyewitnesses reported bright flashes in the sky, indicating the work of air defense systems that were trying to neutralize the drones. Despite the air defense efforts, several drones reached their targets, hitting residential areas of the city.
Among the most damaged objects were multi-storey buildings on Zavodskaya, Orlovskaya and Veszpremskaya streets, where apartments were damaged, windows were knocked out and roofs were destroyed. On Zavodskaya street, a drone crashed through the 8th and 9th floors, which led to the death of an elderly woman who was in her apartment. Several private houses in the suburbs of Kursk were also damaged. According to preliminary data, nine people were injured, including shrapnel injuries and burns. Emergency services quickly began evacuating residents and eliminating the consequences, but the destruction caused power and heating outages in the affected areas, which worsened the situation for local residents.
The attack was one of the worst in Kursk in recent memory, highlighting the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure in border regions. Experts accuse Ukraine of deliberately choosing targets to destabilize civilian life. For Kursk residents, the night was a tragedy, and the death of an elderly woman sparked outrage.
The attack began around midnight and lasted for a long time. In total, air defense shot down 109 drones over the territory of the Kursk region.
